Peace Island Medical Center has been getting national attention. The project won a prestigious AIA National Healthcare Design Award in July, detailed in Building Design & Construction Magazine. It is also the cover story for the July/August issue of Medical Construction & Design Magazine. Both recognize the project's cutting-edge sustainability (such as the clear spans that accommodate daylighting, and use of local materials), along with the special needs of a facility designed for a rural island.

Winning Structure Magazine’s 2012 “No. 2 Best Structural Engineering Firms to Work For” is due to more than great benefits at PCS, where the average tenure is 14 years. It is also the people-oriented environment, the opportunity to leave one’s mark on interesting and challenging projects that push delivery and construction boundaries, and a balance of work and family. Also crucial is a professional mentoring approach that promotes growing from within.

Laser scanning for 3-D as-builting is finally reaching its potential. The scanners themselves are better, with 360 degree capability, faster processing, and greater portability. More importantly, advances in BIM allow a point cloud to link directly to the model graphically, which simplifies use of the information. With these improvements, scanning is increasingly used not only as a framework for design, but also for in-progress quality control and even schedule confirmation.
