Birney Elementary School

Birney Elementary School is home to three Deaf and Hard of Hearing programs for preschool through 5th grade. Birney also offers a special education program and Head Start preschool alongside more traditional school programs.
The current building was built in 1962, with the addition of a gymnasium and resource room in 1972. The new replacement school totals 58,030 SF and features large exposed glulam beams with an open-concept commons area connecting the classroom wings. The commons area has no full-height structural walls, requiring long collector elements to drag lateral forces to enclose the kitchen and classroom wings at the south and east. The team achieved a long double cantilever roof structure at the southwest corner of the building, which required a unique mix of steel and wood to work cohesively while keeping the slim profile designed by the architect.
